Following on from last year's successful dance writing programme, DanceLive 2021 will host a dance writing workshop for those interested in learning more about dance writing technique and working in the industry.

Participants will attend a writing workshop on Thursday 14th October led by dance writer Róisín O’Brien. This workshop will look at the specifics of writing about dance as opposed to other performing arts, and will include practical exercises for participants to explore new ways of writing.

Participants will be then be invited to respond to shows throughout the festival in reviews or more reflective formats: participants will receive feedback from Róisín and their responses will be published on the DanceLive section of the Citymoves website. Participants can expect to write between 1-2 responses.

Participants should be available on Thursday 14th October 9am – 11am for the workshop: participants will also be provided with tickets to selected shows throughout the weekend up until Sunday 17th October, which they will be expected to attend and respond to, as decided in advance.

The workshop will take place in the Anatomy Rooms and online via Zoom.

This programme is for those who already have a writing practice and would like to learn more about dance, or for those working within dance who would like to engage with movement through writing.

To apply, please send a short statement (max 200 words) to roisin.obrien@citymoves.org.uk detailing why you are interested in this opportunity and your previous experience of writing and/or dance, if applicable. Applicants may send a short writing sample if they wish, but this is not a prerequisite. Please also indicate whether you wish to attend in person or online.

If you would like to send your application in another format (such as a short audio or video recording), please get in touch by emailing roisin.obrien@citymoves.org.uk. Please tell us about any access requirements you may have to support you in this project.

Submissions will be considered by the Citymoves DanceLive production team.

Citymoves is committed to equal opportunities. Citymoves welcomes applications from all members of the community, particularly from those underrepresented within contemporary dance and journalism.

Deadline for Applications: Wednesday 6th October, 5pm. Applicants will be notified by Friday 8th October if they are successful.
